The Fourth Wing series, or the Empyrean series as it is also known, is set to have around five books. For now, there are two books in the series, with the first released in May 2023 and the second released in November 2023.
Since the first two books came out in the same year, fans hoped the pattern would continue with Fourth Wing book 3’s release date, too. However, that’s not been the case, as the third book in the series, Onyx Storm, is all set to release on January 21, 2025.
Rebecca Yarros’s series was well received partly because it achieved viral success on a well-known social media app, TikTok. There is a sub-community on the platform called “BookTok,” which helped propel the book into mainstream conversation. It combines fantasy with the dark academia subgenre, giving readers a fantastic ready.
Moreover, within six months of the first book’s release, it was announced that a Fourth Wing TV series was in the works. That’s a testament to how popular the series has become and how famous it’s been even outside the book circle!
It’s been a little over a year since the first book, titled Fourth Wing, was released in May 2023, and the second one, titled Iron Flame, came out soon after in November 2023. But the series isn’t done yet, as the author has announced it will be a five-book series.
The good news is that we officially have a title for the third book, and also its release date. So, it’s likely that when the third book comes out, we will have an update on the release window for the fourth and fifth books, too!
What is the Fourth Wing Book 3: Onyx Storm’s Release Date?
Fourth Wing Book 3’s release date has been officially announced; it will be released on January 21, 2025!
The author of the Fourth Wing series, Rebecca Yarros, had mentioned previously that the third book won’t be released as fast as the second book, as she wants to take her time and stay healthy throughout the process of writing the entire series.
However, she had revealed that she’s already got a release date in her mind, but she’s chosen not to share it with anyone yet.
Although fans were hoping the third book would be out by the end of 2024, that’s not the case. However, the wait won’t be long—the book will be out by the end of January 2025!
The third book will further the storyline of the main character, Violet Sorrengail. Her relationship with her love interest will be tested, followed by more light being thrown on the dragon, Andarna, and the mystery surrounding her.
I don’t want to speculate, as there has been no update regarding the plot of Onyx Storm, but it’s likely to pick up where the previous book left off. But let’s not discuss the plot to avoid any potential spoilers. Until then, let’s talk about the plot of the first two books!
What is the Plot of the Fourth Wing Series?
The first book in the Empyrean series, Fourth Wing, introduces us to a world where dragons exist, and so do dragon riders.
Violet Sorrengail is a twenty-year-old woman who wants to enter the Scribe Quadrant in college as she wants to be close to books and spend her time studying history. It would mean she’d be living a quiet life, which is precisely what she wants.
However, Violet’s mother is the Commanding General and has different plans for her daughter. She orders Violet to join the Riders Quadrant rather than the Scribe Quadrant even though she doesn’t want to.
Violet doesn’t want to become a dragon rider because getting a dragon to bond with you is hard. If you can’t bond with a dragon, you’ll likely end up dead. What’s more, Violet has a connective tissue disorder, meaning she is physically weaker than most students aiming to become dragon riders.
But in the end, Violet realizes she has no choice in the matter, as her mother will get her way again. So, she joins the Riders Quadrant and immediately becomes a target of other students because of who her mother is.
If surviving through college and finding a dragon to bond with her wasn’t enough, she also has a potential love connection to deal with. Of course, there’s also the war that the Kingdom is currently involved in. Considering all these things, Violet isn’t sure she will survive for long.
In the second book, Iron Flame, we are back in Violet Sorrengail’s life. She somehow managed to survive her first year at Basgiath War College in the Riders Quadrant. This is a surprise to everyone, even Violet herself, who was always known as a fragile individual. However, she hasn’t died yet and is ready for another year at the college.
Once the training finally begins, Violet begins to doubt herself quite often. The new vice commandant seems to have it out for her and wants her to fail. She doesn’t know why he wants to break her, but he seems determined.
Although Violet has had a weak body since she was born and has struggled her entire life, she does have two things going for her. She is very clever, which she often uses to her advantage, and she has a strong will. It’s a will that is not easy to break.
Then again… she knows something about the war college, and it’s a secret that might break her and put the entire world at risk.
Fantasy is such a rich genre with many possibilities. If you add dragons into the mix, you will surely intrigue anyone into reading the series. Dragons are beloved fantasy creatures found in plenty of modern and classic tales in the fantasy genre.
It may not sound like it on the surface, but Violet’s story has plenty of romance to keep you coming for more. Not to mention the great worldbuilding the author manages to do.
So, if you consider all these things – a good mix of multiple genres, intriguing characters, a fantastic world with dragons, and high stakes – it is natural that you’d be eager to continue your reading journey. However, you must wait a little before the Fourth Wing book 3 comes out!
Conclusion
BookTok might have helped bring the Fourth Wing series to the forefront of everyone’s attention, but it continues to attract fans because of its characters, worldbuilding, romance, fantasy, and dragons.
It’s always difficult to wait for a new book in a series because you want to know what will happen next so badly! Fans of this series are lucky to have two books in less than one year. The third book might be just around the corner, and if it isn’t, they will wait patiently for it to be released to the public.
That’s the least we could do: give the author time to work on the Fourth Wing book 3 and give us a story we’d be happy to read and willing to wait for another book!
