By now, you have probably heard the good news that the hit movie based on Freida McFadden’s novel, The Housemaid, is getting a sequel. Everyone who loves psychological thrillers has been raving about The Housemaid book series after Freida released the first book, The Housemaid, in 2022.
Given the success of the books and the film, it was a no-brainer to greenlight the sequel. Shortly after its release on December 19, 2025, the movie did exceptionally well despite competing with major holiday blockbusters.
It did so well that it became one of Lionsgate’s most successful mid-budget films in years. Globally, the film grossed approximately $385 million worldwide. Considering it was produced on a moderate budget of $35 million, it is an amazing feat that it earned more than ten times its production costs.
With viewers eager for more and hoping to see Millie continue her streak of vigilante justice, there is no reason not to give the people what they want. As such, it was revealed that The Housemaid’s Secret, the sequel to The Housemaid novel, will also receive a movie adaptation.
So what will the sequel’s plot be? Don’t fret; we will tell you all about it. Let’s look at the release date for The Housemaid’s Secret movie and what to expect from it!
The Housemaid’s Secret Movie Release Date:
Filming is set to start in 2026 following the huge box-office success of the first movie. Unfortunately, there has been no official release date.
But the movie is expected to be released in late 2026, around the same time as the first. And if that’s not possible, it will probably get an early 2027 release.
As for the production, Paul Feig will return as director, and Rebecca Sonnenshine will write the screenplay as well. Of course, Freida McFadden will remain an executive producer for this one, too!
Sydney Sweeney and Michele Morrone are confirmed to return. Although Amanda Seyfried’s character is not around, the actress has expressed interest in reprising her role, at least for a small cameo.
What will be the Plot of The Housemaid’s Secret Movie?
If you are a fan of the Housemaid series, you have probably devoured this book, page by page. The first book was a superhit, and the second book also became an international bestseller!
The book follows Millie as she starts a new, exciting job at a high-end Manhattan penthouse where the Garrick family lives. As fate would have it, sometimes a fresh start is another repeat of the same problems with different characters.
In this new job, Millie discovers that her new employer’s wife, Wendy, might be another victim of domestic abuse. Unable to ignore the situation, Millie steps in to offer her expertise.
If you haven’t read the book yet, check out its official synopsis below because the movie adaptation will closely follow the book’s plot!
It’s hard to find an employer who doesn’t ask too many questions about my past. So I thank my lucky stars that the Garricks miraculously give me a job, cleaning their stunning penthouse with views across the city and preparing fancy meals in their shiny kitchen.
I can work here for a while, stay quiet until I get what I want. It’s almost perfect. But I still haven’t met Mrs. Garrick or seen inside the guest bedroom. I’m sure I hear her crying. I notice spots of blood around the neck of her white nightgowns when I’m doing laundry. And one day, I can’t help but knock on the door. When it gently swings open, what I see inside changes everything.
That’s when I make a promise. After all, I’ve done this before. I can protect Mrs. Garrick while keeping my own secrets locked up safe. Douglas Garrick has done wrong. He is going to pay. It’s simply a question of how far I’m willing to go.
Can I Read The Housemaid’s Secret Without Reading Other Books in the Series?
Most of Freida McFadden’s novels are standalone psychological thrillers, but that’s not the case with The Housemaid books.
The Housemaid’s Secret is a direct sequel to The Housemaid, and as such, you should read it after you’ve read the first novel. There’s a third novel as well, and a novella, so read all the books in the series chronologically to understand exactly what is happening in Millie’s life.
