Well, it looks like Warner Bros is getting the gang back together. They recently announced that Stephen King and Mike Flanagan will be working together on the remake of King’s 1980 novella, The Mist.

Mike and King have worked together on three completed projects, namely Gerald’s Game (2017), Doctor Sleep (2019), and The Life of Chuck (2025).

They also have two more upcoming projects, namely Carrie and The Dark Tower. Initially, Mike was set to work on the Revival adaptation, but the project was cancelled due to numerous factors.

It comes as no surprise that Mike was chosen for this project, as Stephen King has always been outspoken about his appreciation for Mike’s work.

In 2024, during an interview with Dread Central, King praised Mike’s ability to stay true to the books. After watching The Fall of the House of Usher, King took to his X account to once again praise Mike, calling him the “Quentin Tarantino of horror.”

Mike has also always shown his appreciation for Stephen King’s work, frequently referring to him as his hero. He has also talked in great detail about the honour and respect he feels for the opportunity to work on his dream project. Through his projects with King, Mike has built a reputation for bringing unfilmable stories to life.

Reactions to the news of the new movie adaptation of The Mist have been conflicting. Many are sceptical, questioning the need for a remake. To them, the 2007 Frank Darabont film was a masterpiece. Others can’t wait to see how Mike will direct the movie. They have confidence in the ‘Flanagan Touch’ given Mike’s proven record on King’s other projects.

What will be the Plot of The Mist Remake Movie?

Following the news of the remake, there has been online discourse on whether Mike will stay true to the book. Many people are curious whether Mike will take a fresh angle at the story. In particular, everyone is curious whether he will stick to the book’s original ending or incorporate Darabont’s open-ended ending.

Many fans believe Mike is the ideal director to address the themes of religious fanaticism and community collapse central to The Mist.

Although we still have no news on the script, it is expected to stay true to the source material. The remake will center on the deadly mist that envelops a small Maine town, leading to a group of survivors taking shelter at a store. However, they quickly realise that the real horrors are not outside!

If you haven’t yet read the book, here’s the official synopsis so you know exactly what to expect from the book and the upcoming movie adaptation:

A man staggered into the market… ‘Something in the fog!’ he screamed.

Following a freak summer storm, David Drayton, his son Billy, and their neighbour Brent Norton join dozens of others and head to the local grocery store to replenish supplies.

Once there, they become trapped by a strange mist that has enveloped the town. Violent forces concealed in the mist are starting to emerge. And there is another shocking threat from within – one group of survivors, led by a religious zealot, is calling for a sacrifice.

Now David and his son must try to escape. But what’s outside may be even more dangerous.

Casting & Production Updates:

We know that Mike Flanagan is set to write, direct, and produce the film under his production company, Red Room Pictures.

Normally, Mike collaborates with the Newton Brothers, who will most likely join the project as composers. We also expect his favourite cinematographer, Michael Fimognari, to join the project.

There has been no official casting news.

However, there have been speculations about “Flanagan Favourites”—actors with whom he has previously worked on King’s related projects.

The Mist Remake Movie Release Date:

There has been no official announcement of a release date, as the movie adaptation news was just announced.

Mike is currently wrapping up his other project, which is the Carrie TV series.

The Mist remake will likely enter pre-production in late 2026. Given the film’s intense setting, we will have to wait until late 2027 or early 2028 to see this anticipated remake.

Should You Read the Book Instead?

Yes, definitely read the books and watch the original movie as well. It is famous for its nihilistic ending.

The remake is expected to make a few differences, as each director has a different philosophy on horror. At the end of the day, reading the source material is always advisable.
