If you thought that your favorite book series has already gotten a book adaptation and no other series will get one for the time being, you are wrong because the news just broke that Lauren Roberts’ Powerless trilogy is getting a TV adaptation!

The Powerless TV series is officially in development at Amazon MGM Studios. It joins books like the Fourth Wing and Rose Hill series that the studio is adapting.

The upcoming adaptation is based on a young adult fantasy series by Lauren Roberts, which consists of three books: Powerless (2023), Reckless (2024), and Fearless (2025). At this point, it isn’t clear if we’ll get multiple seasons adapting all the books in the trilogy or just one. But we know it all depends on the first season’s performance.

This book series has already won over readers with its compelling blend of forbidden magic, fierce rebellion, and passionate romance, and now it will wow people who prefer watching adaptations over reading books!

Following the cancellation of The Wheel of Time TV series, Amazon has acquired rights to several book series, and it seems as though the studio is going full throttle into adapting popular books from different genres.

And this romantasy series by Lauren Roberts is one of the many it has acquired and is planning to adapt and release in the future!

So, do we know when the TV adaptation will be released? And who will be the cast and crew responsible for the show? Let’s talk about it in more detail!

Powerless TV Series – Plot Overview:

Lauren Roberts’s Powerless series introduces readers to the kingdom of Ilya, which is a beautiful kingdom if you are one of the Elites, people with powers, and not the Ordinaries, people without powers.

A plague many years ago hit the kingdom’s residents, and although it was deadly, it came with gifts. Among those who survived the plague, some were gifted with extraordinary powers, and some did not receive any such gifts.

And so a divided society came into existence, where those with magical abilities enjoy wealth, influence, and power, while those without magic—the powerless—are mistreated and oppressed. The divide was further broadened when the king decreed that the “ordinaries” were to be purged or killed to maintain the society of “elites.”

Paedyn Gray is one of the story’s main characters; she is a determined and brave young woman born without magic. She lives in the slums and is a cunning thief who poses as a Psychic to fool the Elites and survive in the kingdom.

Opposite Paedyn stands Kai Azer, the prince of the kingdom and a future Enforcer whose job is to purge ordinaries. He is a young man born into privilege due to his powerful magic, yet conflicted about the oppressive system his family supports.

After a fateful encounter, the two are thrown into a world of chaos, and Paedyn finds herself in the middle of a brutal competition that is held to showcase the Elites’ powers—something she clearly lacks!

The official synopsis for the first book in the series is as follows:

“Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya—the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites.

The powers these Elites have possessed for decades were graciously gifted to them by the Plague, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that—ordinary. And when the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished in order to preserve his Elite society, lacking an ability suddenly became a crime—making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity.

Surviving in the slums as an Ordinary is no simple task, and Paedyn knows this better than most. Having been trained by her father to be overly observant since she was a child, Paedyn poses as a Psychic in the crowded city, blending in with the Elites as best she can in order to stay alive and out of trouble. Easier said than done.

When Paeydn unsuspectingly saves one of Ilyas’ princes, she finds herself thrown into the Purging Trials. The brutal competition exists to showcase the Elites’ powers—the very thing Paedyn lacks. If the Trials and the opponents within them don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for certainly will if he discovers what she is—completely Ordinary.”

What is the Release Date for the Powerless TV Adaptation?

At the time of writing this, there is no release date for the book’s TV series adaptation. The news about it becoming a TV show was announced on June 5, 2025, so it is too soon for the producers to reveal the release date!

Who is Developing the Powerless TV Series?

Will Gluck’s Olive Bridge and Lyrical Media had acquired the rights to Lauren Roberts’ books, and it is revealed that the TV series will be adapted by Daphne Ferraro, who is well-known as the writer for season 2 of Dark and as the head writer of the German series Maxton Hall.

Apart from this information and the fact that Amazon MGM Studios is developing the series, no further information has been revealed.

At such an early stage, when the book adaptation was just announced, we shouldn’t expect any information to be revealed. But considering that Lauren Roberts’ Powerless is one of the most popular fantasy series right now, you can expect the project to move forward and see some updates in the coming months!
