In case you weren’t aware, Carley Fortune’s bestselling novel, Every Summer After, is officially getting a TV series adaptation, which is titled “Every Year After.”

There’s nothing quite like a novel that captures the feeling of one summer changing everything—and then the years that follow, but that’s exactly what this novel is all about. Every Summer After, from Canadian author Carley Fortune, swiftly became a touchstone for readers who loved the mix of lake-house nostalgia, friends-to-lovers tension, and emotional growth.

Now, the story is heading to the screen as a full-on TV series, and the anticipation is as high as you’d expect!

The series is currently being filmed, and there is a high possibility that it will be released sometime next year, unless some unforeseen circumstances arise.

Carley Fortune’s writing style is grounded in rich emotional undercurrents, anchored in real places—such as her family cottage in Barry’s Bay, Ontario, which inspired the lake-town setting of her breakout novel. Her characters feel grounded: flawed, longing, nostalgic, and trying to reconcile past mistakes with present hopes.

That blend of romance and introspection sets her apart in the contemporary romance arena!

Every Summer After, published in May 2022, reached top positions on The New York Times bestseller lists and spent a lot of time there. The story’s success led to more titles—Meet Me at the Lake in 2023, This Summer Will Be Different in 2024, and One Golden Summer in 2025—which all became bestsellers. The author is now gearing up for her next release, Our Perfect Storm, which is scheduled for release in May 2026.

In this article, we’ll explore what’s currently confirmed about the Every Summer After TV adaptation—who’s involved, how the plot might translate to screen, when it might arrive, and whether it’s worth reading the book before diving into the series.

What is the Plot of the Every Summer After TV Series?

In the novel, Every Summer After, Persephone “Percy” Fraser returns to her childhood summer town of Barry’s Bay, Ontario, after years apart from her best friend Sam Florek.

The two spent every summer together, growing up side by side—until one mistake severed their bond. Now grown, they must confront what happened, whether forgiveness is possible, and what “home” really means.

The story spans six summers of love, longing, and loss, which then condenses into a pivotal week where everything catches up with them. The adaptation, titled “Every Year After,” will likely explore not only their romance but also how time, memory, and place shape identity.

With a series format, there’s space to deepen characters’ backstories and the emotional stakes of returning home. This gives the show an advantage: the ability to breathe life into more than just the main couple.

If you haven’t read the book, check out its official synopsis to know what to expect from the upcoming adaptation:

They say you can never go home again, and for Persephone Fraser, ever since she made the biggest mistake of her life a decade ago, that has felt too true. Instead of glittering summers on the lakeshore of her childhood, she spends them in a stylish apartment in the city, going out with friends, and keeping everyone a safe distance from her heart.

Until she receives the call that sends her racing back to Barry’s Bay and into the orbit of Sam Florek—the man she never thought she’d have to live without.

For six summers, through hazy afternoons on the water and warm summer nights working in his family’s restaurant and curling up together with books—medical textbooks for him and work-in-progress horror short stories for her—Percy and Sam had been inseparable. Eventually that friendship turned into something breathtakingly more, before it fell spectacularly apart.

When Percy returns to the lake for Sam’s mother’s funeral, their connection is as undeniable as it had always been. But until Percy can confront the decisions she made and the years she’s spent punishing herself for them, they’ll never know whether their love might be bigger than the biggest mistakes of their past.

Casting & Production Updates:

When the TV adaptation was announced, many readers saw it as the perfect next step. The story of Percy and Sam—childhood friends, summers spent together, one mistake that changed everything—already had the kind of character intimacy and time span that makes for strong episodic television.

In July 2024, Amazon MGM Studios officially ordered the series adaptation of Every Summer After, now retitled Every Year After.

Showrunner and executive producer Leila Gerstein was initially attached, though later reporting indicates a shift to another showrunner, Amy B. Harris. Carley Fortune is also attached as an executive producer.

Casting announcements in 2025 revealed Sadie Soverall as Percy and Matt Cornett as Sam. Supporting cast includes Aurora Perrineau, Abigail Cowen, Michael Bradway, and Joseph Chiu.

Production is reportedly underway, with filming expected to continue through 2025.

Every Year After TV Series Release Date:

No official premiere date has been announced for the “Every Year After” TV series as of yet.

With production underway and a major streaming partner, Amazon, attached, many anticipate a release sometime in 2026.

Should You Read the Book Instead?

If you enjoy emotional resonance, not just romance, then you should definitely read the book before watching the series!

Carley Fortune’s novel offers a rich inner life, with Percy’s reflections, the lakeside setting, and the years that pass. These layers help illustrate why the story resonates beyond its “summer romance” surface. Reading first means you’ll fully feel those moments and later appreciate the show’s translation of them.

Going into the series with the book under your belt also lets you notice adaptation choices—what was kept, what changed, and how tone shifts.

For a story like this, so tied to memory and place, reading first often enriches your viewing experience when the Every Summer After TV series is finally released!
