Clare Leslie Hall’s Broken Country became an instant bestseller when it was released earlier this year, so it’s no wonder that it’s been picked up for a movie adaptation!

Picture a quiet English village, its fields full of sheep and the wind whispering old secrets between stone fences. Enter a farmer’s wife, a returning first love, and a tragedy that unravels everything they built. That haunting blend of romance, mystery, and rural suspense is the core of Broken Country, and now it’s poised to reach new audiences through a major film adaptation.

Clare Leslie Hall is a British novelist and journalist living in Dorset with her family. Before writing this novel, she wrote domestic noir thrillers under the name Clare Empson and built her craft exploring secrets beneath everyday lives. With Broken Country, she got what many are calling her breakout work: emotionally rich, suspenseful, and deeply grounded in the English countryside.

She has said that the landscape she grew up in, the old farmhouse in Dorset, and the fields behind it, shaped the story.

Broken Country was published on March 4, 2025, by Simon & Schuster in the US and John Murray in the UK. It was quickly chosen as a selection for Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club, and then it exploded in popularity as readers read it and absolutely fell in love with it. The novel struck a chord with readers for its mixture of romance, tragedy, and moral reckoning in a rural setting.

Now, the leap from page to screen is officially underway as Sony 3000 Pictures has acquired the film rights in partnership with Hello Sunshine, which is Reese Witherspoon’s production company.

In this article, we’ll explore what we know so far about the film (casting, production, timeline), how the story may translate to the screen, and whether reading the book first is worth your time.

What Will Be The Plot of Broken Country Movie?

At the heart of Broken Country is a woman named Beth, married to a steady farmer in a rural English village where everyone’s life seems mapped out and safe. Her first love, Gabriel, left years earlier, but when he returns to the community with his young son, Beth’s carefully constructed life begins to crack.

As past and present collide, a death on the farm sets off a chain of secrets, grief, and questions of loyalty. The story spans decades, weaving the echoes of young passion with the weight of long-buried guilt.

For the screen version, this means the film has the opportunity to bring the lush countryside, the passage of time, and the subtle tensions of the village setting to vivid life. It will be interesting to see how the nonlinear timeline and the multiple layers of emotion are handled in cinematic form.

If you haven’t yet read the book, check out its official synopsis to get an idea of what to expect when you watch the movie adaptation or decide to read the book:

Beth and her gentle, kind husband, Frank, are happily married, but their relationship relies on the past staying buried. But when Beth’s brother-in-law shoots a dog going after their sheep, Beth doesn’t realize that the gunshot will alter the course of their lives. For the dog belonged to none other than Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager—the man who broke her heart years ago.

Gabriel has returned to the village with his young son Leo, a boy who reminds Beth very much of her own son, who died in a tragic accident.

As Beth is pulled back into Gabriel’s life, tensions around the village rise, and dangerous secrets and jealousies from the past resurface, this time with deadly consequences. Beth is forced to make a choice between the woman she once was and the woman she has become.

Casting & Production Updates:

The film rights to Broken Country were secured by Sony’s 3000 Pictures in collaboration with Hello Sunshine, the team behind the adaptation of Where the Crawdads Sing.

Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter are attached as producers for Hello Sunshine, while Ashley Strumwasser will executive-produce. Meanwhile, Marisa Paiva is overseeing the adaptation’s development.

The most interesting thing to note is that the film rights to Clare Leslie Hall’s Broken Country were acquired in April 2024, almost a year before the book was published. The book came out in March 2025, became a bestseller, and proved that it is indeed worthy of being adapted for the big screen!

As of now, no director has been publicly confirmed, nor have actors for principal roles been officially announced. Early development is underway, though the production is still in its early phases with no shooting schedule released at this time.

Broken Country Movie Release Date:

At this stage, no official release date has been announced for the film adaptation of Clare Leslie Hall’s Broken Country.

Given that the rights deal was finalized in 2024 and development is early, a wide release is likely a couple of years away. It’s best to watch for announcements from Sony or Hello Sunshine for casting, production schedules, and premiere details.

Should You Read the Book Instead?

It’s always a good idea to read the book and get familiar with the source material, whether it’s before or after you watch the movie adaptation, because the book is almost always better.

In the case of Broken Country, if you love emotionally charged stories that combine romance, suspense, and rich setting, then reading it first is a strong recommendation.

The novel gives you access to the characters’ inner lives, the alternating timelines, and the suspenseful build-up in full. Film adaptations can’t always convey every nuance of time shifts and layered guilt.

Plus, knowing the book gives you a deeper appreciation of how the filmmakers adapt, condense, or even shift certain elements, so you’ll be tuned into what works and what might change. In the case of Broken Country, the slow reveal of secrets and the emotional resonance are key; reading ahead might enhance your viewing experience.
