A Court of Thorns and Roses, popularly known as ACOTAR, is a popular romantasy book series that fans hoped would be adapted into a movie or a TV show!

Fans of the series would already know that the books were being adapted into a TV series by Hulu, but not many updates were announced about its development. But we finally have an update, and it isn’t good!

The TV adaptation of A Court of Thorns and Roses is officially cancelled!

The project, which had been in development since March 2021, will no longer move forward at the streaming platform. However, the story may not end here, as author Sarah J. Maas will be free to explore new avenues to bring her beloved series to the screen once the rights to her books revert to her.

Now that the TV adaptation is cancelled, is there any hope that ACOTAR fans will see their favorite characters come to life? Maybe there is!

A Court of Thorns and Roses is the First Book in the Series!

A Court of Thorns and Roses was first published in 2015, with the most recent book, A Court of Silver Flames, published in 2021.

So far, there are five books in the series, and a sixth ACOTAR book is in the works, too.

The book focuses on a young woman named Feyre Archeron, a mortal woman brought to the land called Prythian, a magical realm of immortal faeries. Feyre has committed a crime of killing a wolf, which happened to be one of the Fae!

She is then brought to Pyrthian to pay for her crimes, and her punishment is to stay in the faerie realm forever to keep her family safe!

As things happen, Feyre finds herself too deeply entangled in this new world, and when a war breaks out, she needs to figure out where her allegiance lies!

The author of this series is Sarah J. Maas, who began writing her debut novel when she was sixteen, even publishing it online. This series later became known as Throne of Glass, which is also considered one of the best fantasy series ever.

The History of ACOTAR TV Series!

The television adaptation of ACOTAR was first announced in March 2021, with Sarah J. Maas collaborating with Ronald D. Moore, the creator of Outlander, to develop the series for Hulu.

The project aimed to bring the rich world of Prythian and its complex characters to life, generating significant excitement among the series’ dedicated fanbase.

Despite initial enthusiasm, updates on the show’s progress were scarce.

In July 2024, Moore revealed that he was no longer involved with the project, stating that he had departed from Disney and returned to Sony, leaving the series’ status uncertain.

In February 2025, Hulu confirmed that the ACOTAR series would not proceed. The streaming platform decided not to move forward with the adaptation. This decision came after prolonged development delays, partly due to industry-wide strikes in 2023 that affected many scripted productions.

Disney’s 20th Television retains the adaptation rights for the book series until late Summer 2025. Once these rights expire, the author Sarah J. Maas will be free to do whatever she wants.

Is There A Chance We Will Get An ACOTAR TV Series?

It certainly has the potential to become one of the best book adaptations of all time, but it heavily depends on how the book’s story is adapted for TV screens!

And yes, there is a high chance that the A Court of Thorns and Roses books will be faithfully adapted!

After the rights of the TV series expire, Sarah J. Maas plans to explore new opportunities and pitch the idea of the show to other studios and streaming platforms.

More and more books are being picked up for studios for an adaptation. More recently, it was announced that Michael B. Jordan’s production company has acquired rights to produce a Fourth Wing TV series.

Regarding ACOTAR, the BookTok went nuts when Sarah J. Maas was spotted with Margot Robbie. This meeting sparked rumors that the actress would be involved in the now-scrapped TV series.

However, considering Margot Robbie is a huge fan of the series and has her own production company, fans are expecting some positive news from that front!

But for now, we need to be patient and trust that the author will bring ACOTAR’s characters to life, and when it does happen, it will happen in a manner that’s faithful to the books!
