Fans of horror with a smart twist, this one’s for you: The Final Girl Support Group is being adapted into a television series!

Written by Grady Hendrix, this novel doesn’t just riff on horror tropes, it reinvents them by revisiting what happens to “final girls” after the massacre ends. And now, it’s finally heading to the screen.

Grady Hendrix is a powerhouse in contemporary horror and dark fiction. A New York Times bestselling author, his career spans genre-bending works like Horrorstör, My Best Friend’s Exorcism, The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires, The Final Girl Support Group, How to Sell a Haunted House, and, more recently, Witchcraft for Wayward Girls, which was published in 2025!

His writing is renowned for striking a balance between humor, heart, and horror, creating stories that are terrifying, unforgettable, and emotionally charged.

The Final Girl Support Group caused a stir upon its release in 2021. It tracks the lives of several “final girls”—the lone survivors of horror-movie–style massacres—who find one another and form a support group. What starts as therapy becomes a fight for survival when these women realize they are being targeted.

The book was praised for its meta-awareness, emotional depth, and empowering portrayal of trauma survivors. It even earned Hendrix the Goodreads Choice Award for Horror.

Now that the book is in development to become a TV series, fans of the author, as well as horror fans in general, are eagerly anticipating its adaptation.

What is the Plot of The Final Girl Support Group TV Series?

At its core, The Final Girl Support Group is a love letter to horror movies and the women who survive till the end in them!

The novel imagines what happens after the credits roll—when the “final girl,” the last survivor of a massacre, has to live with the trauma, fame, and unwanted attention of being forever defined by that single night.

The story follows a group of these women, each the survivor of a different horror-movie–style tragedy, who meet in a support group to cope with their pasts. But when their sanctuary is threatened and danger creeps back into their lives, they must decide if they can rely on one another—or if survival, once again, is something they’ll have to face alone.

If you haven’t read the book yet, please do so now. Below is the official synopsis of the book, which will also largely stay the same for the upcoming TV adaptation:

In horror movies, the final girls are the ones left standing when the credits roll. They made it through the worst night of their lives… but what happens after?

Lynnette Tarkington is a real-life final girl who survived a massacre. For more than a decade, she’s been meeting with five other final girls and their therapist in a support group for those who survived the unthinkable, working to put their lives back together.

Then one woman misses a meeting, and their worst fears are realized—someone knows about the group and is determined to rip their lives apart again, piece by piece.

But the thing about final girls is that no matter how bad the odds, how dark the night, how sharp the knife, they will never, ever give up.

The Final Girl Support Group TV Series Release Date:

Although it was announced in 2021 that Grady Hendrix’s bestselling novel had been picked up for a TV series adaptation, we haven’t heard much from those in charge of the series.

As such, there is no release date for the novel’s TV adaptation!

Since no update has been shared regarding the adaptation, we don’t know who will be cast as the lead character. However, fans have had some interesting suggestions on who should play the role of the final girls!

As for who is handling the project behind the scenes, we do know that HBO Max is developing the adaptation, and it will be produced by Charlize Theron’s production company, as well as by Barbara and Andy Muschietti.

Andy Muschetti is also set to direct the pilot episode of the series.

Should You Read the Book Before You Watch the Adaptation?

If you’re new to Grady Hendrix, starting with the book is the best way to experience the raw tension and meta-horror commentary he’s known for.

On the page, Hendrix layers sharp humor with chilling tension, and he delves deeply into the psychology of his characters, particularly exploring the themes of trauma, resilience, and the cost of survival. Readers also get the full range of Hendrix’s voice: witty, dark, and strangely uplifting.

That said, the TV adaptation will bring the story to life in a whole new way. The series format means we’ll see more visual nods to slasher films, expanded character arcs, and the potential for new subplots that weren’t in the novel.

However, watching it after reading can be especially rewarding as you’ll be able to catch every Easter egg and appreciate how the show interprets key moments.

So, there’s no correct answer because it’s up to your personal preference. If you enjoy reading, pick up the book, but if you are more of a movie person, wait for The Final Girl Support Group TV series to be released!

  • Katabasis TV Series
