A Vampire Diaries reunion was not something I had on my bingo card for 2026. But Hulu just made it happen, and the project they are reuniting for is genuinely one of the year’s most talked-about domestic thrillers.
Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley are attached to star in, and executive produce, You Deserve to Know, a Hulu drama in development based on Aggie Blum Thompson’s 2025 novel. The series landed at Hulu in a competitive situation and comes from writer Brian Tanen, Alex Cooper’s Unwell Productions, and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment.
Nina Dobrev plays Gwen, and Paul Wesley plays Scott, two neighbors thrown on opposite sides of a murder investigation.
Dobrev announced the reunion on Instagram herself:
“@paulwesley and I are reuniting to executive produce and star in ‘You Deserve to Know’. Getting to help shape this adaptation from both sides of the camera has been incredibly exciting.”
Who Is Aggie Blum Thompson?
Before Aggie Blum Thompson wrote suburban thrillers, she covered real-life crime as a newspaper reporter for publications including The Boston Globe and The Washington Post. That background in crime reporting gives her domestic noir a specificity and authenticity that sets it apart from the crowded field of neighborhood thriller fiction.
She lives with her family in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., just over the Maryland line in Bethesda, which is also where her books are set.
All four of her domestic thrillers, including I Don’t Forgive You, All the Dirty Secrets, Such a Lovely Family, and You Deserve to Know, are set in the D.C. area. The Washington City Paper called her “the master of suburban scandal,” and the description has stuck.
Her novels have already attracted significant attention from Hollywood. Options for film or TV adaptations have been sold for her first three novels, and Netflix is also currently developing Such a Lovely Family as a drama series from showrunner Addison McQuigg and Kapital Entertainment.
Thompson is on a remarkable run, and You Deserve to Know landing at Hulu with this cast feels like the project that will bring her to the widest audience yet.
What Is You Deserve to Know About?
The novel opens with a structural choice that immediately grabs your attention. There is a framing device, a Dateline-style interview about a bestselling autofiction book called You Deserve to Know, written by someone involved in the events. Readers know going in that at least one character survives to tell the tale. The question is which one.
The official description sets up the central premise:
Neighbors Gwen, Aimee, and Lisa share more than playdates and coffee mornings on their tranquil street in East Bethesda. They confide their deepest secrets, navigate the challenges of motherhood together, and provide a support system that seems unbreakable. But when Gwen’s husband is found murdered after one of their weekly Friday night dinners, the peaceful quiet of their cul-de-sac shatters.
The night that sets everything in motion unfolds at one of the group’s regular Friday gatherings, when Anton, who has been drinking heavily, corners Aimee and whispers four words in her ear: “You deserve to know.”
The next morning, the police arrive to tell Gwen that Anton has been found dead near a local bar. Investigators soon discover that Aimee’s husband Scott was one of the last people to see Anton alive. The women begin to turn on one another. Flashbacks reveal cracks in the friendship that predate that night entirely.
Publishers Weekly described the novel as a “captivating standalone” in which “the women start to turn on one another” with a thriller that builds steadily toward a genuinely twisty resolution. The Washington City Paper’s description, “a moody thriller in soccer mom drag,” captures the specific pleasures of Thompson’s approach perfectly.
The Cast and the Chemistry That Has Everyone Talking
The casting of Dobrev and Wesley is what made this announcement land so loudly, and the Kapital Entertainment connection helps explain how it came together.
Aaron Kaplan previously worked with both actors individually. Dobrev starred in Kapital’s CBS comedy Fam, while Wesley starred in the company’s psychological thriller Tell Me a Story for CBS All Access. Bringing them together on this project was a deliberate creative decision, not a coincidence.
The Vampire Diaries ran for eight seasons on the CW and ended in 2017. In it, Dobrev played Elena Gilbert, and Wesley played vampire Stefan Salvatore, two characters whose romantic arc was one of the defining relationships of early-2010s television.
Gwen and Scott are notably not a romantic couple in this series. They are neighbors on opposite sides of a murder investigation, setting up a charged, adversarial dynamic that gives both actors very different material to work with than The Vampire Diaries ever did. That tension should play very well.
The Full Creative Team
Brian Tanen, the adapter, is known for Grand Hotel, Love, Victor, and Devious Maids. Executive producing alongside Dobrev, Wesley, Tanen, and Thompson are Alex Cooper and Matt Kaplan of Unwell Productions, Mina Lefevre, and Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment.
Co-executive producing are Kapital’s Jaiden Kaplan and Dylan Hammalian and Unwell’s Paul Kim and Kendall Boucher. Kapital and 20th Television are the studios.
Alex Cooper’s Unwell Productions continues to build one of the more interesting slates in current television. The company is simultaneously developing Ali Hazelwood’s Deep End at Netflix, Hannah Grace’s Icebreaker for Netflix, and Love, Theoretically at Amazon MGM — all in the same year. Cooper’s instinct for what this particular audience wants is becoming impossible to ignore.
No premiere date has been announced. The project is in development, and no additional cast has been confirmed beyond Dobrev and Wesley.
