Lucy Score’s bestselling novel, Things We Never Got Over, is being adapted into a TV series by Amazon MGM Studios. This heartfelt, gritty romance, which is equal parts tender, funny, and irreverent, has already earned massive fan love. Now, viewers will get to watch it come alive!
Lucy Score’s path to becoming a bestselling author was cemented the moment she lost her job, which was just before the release of her second book. That loss propelled her into a full-time writing career, and the rest, as they say, is romance history.
The Knockemout series, which began with Things We Never Got Over in 2022, followed by Things We Hide from the Light in 2023, and Things We Left Behind in 2023, has made her a rom-com darling who pushes emotional boundaries. With her fierce blend of humor, heartfelt storytelling, and unapologetically adult romance, she has built a devoted global fan base!
So, it wasn’t much of a surprise when it was announced that a TV series adaptation based on the Things We Never Got Over was in development!
With Amazon MGM Studios turning this first chapter into a televised romance, fans are buzzing with anticipation. Will Knockemout’s whiskey and banter make it to the screen? Will Naomi’s spunky resilience and Knox’s gruff heart translate authentically? That’s what we’ll discuss in this article as we explore everything we know about the upcoming adaptation.
What is the Plot of Things We Never Got Over TV Series?
Since the book is being developed into a TV series, we can safely assume that not many things will be cut in the adaptation. As the series will have multiple episodes, all your favorite moments will likely make it on your screen.
Things We Never Got Over opens with Naomi, a runaway bride, fleeing to Knockemout, Virginia—only to land in the life she never planned, which is caring for her niece she didn’t know she had.
Then there’s Knox Morgan, the taciturn local barber who doesn’t do drama or complications. But as Naomi starts building a life from chaos, Knox finds himself tangled in her mess.
Their dynamic is slow-burning hostility that gradually melts into something deeply touching. What truly anchors the romance is Naomi’s fierce instinct to protect, and Knox’s hidden, unwavering reliability.
If you haven’t read the book, check out its official synopsis below to find out what to expect from the adaptation:
Bearded, bad-boy barber Knox prefers to live his life the way he takes his coffee: alone, unless you count his basset hound, Waylon. Knox doesn’t tolerate drama, even when it comes in the form of a stranded runaway bride.
Naomi wasn’t just running away from her wedding. She was riding to the rescue of her estranged twin to Knockemout, Virginia, a rough-around-the-edges town where disputes are settled the old-fashioned way—with fists and beer. Usually in that order.
Too bad for Naomi, her evil twin hasn’t changed at all. After helping herself to Naomi’s car and cash, Tina leaves her with something unexpected. The niece Naomi didn’t know she had. Now she’s stuck in town with no car, no job, no plan, and no home with an 11-year-old going on thirty to take care of.
There’s a reason Knox doesn’t date complicated women or those who require a lot of attention, especially not the romantic ones. But since Naomi’s life imploded right in front of him, the least he can do is help her out of her jam. And just as soon as she stops getting into new trouble, he can leave her alone and get back to his peaceful, solitary life.
At least, that’s the plan until the trouble turns to real danger.
Things We Never Got Over TV Adaptation Release Date:
When Amazon MGM Studios first confirmed the development in December 2023, no official premiere date had been announced.
Given the typical TV production timeline, fans can likely expect Things We Never Got Over to drop sometime in the next couple of years; the best-case scenario is a bit after 2026!
And we recently got another update regarding the TV series as there was a change in who will be the showrunner for the project, so it’s likely that the project is moving finally moving along nicely.
The Cast of Things We Never Got Over TV Series:
The show is still in the early stages of production, so it’s unlikely a cast will be announced anytime soon.
However, this hasn’t stopped people from doing fan castings on who they think should play the lead characters. There are some really cool actors that fans of the book hope will play the lead characters, but nothing’s official yet.
Who is Developing the TV Adaptation of Things We Never Got Over?
Amazon MGM Studios acquired the rights to adapt Lucy Score’s ‘Things We Never Got Over.’ Once production begins and filming is complete, the show will be available to stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
Earlier, Amy Rardin, who has previously worked on shows such as Echo and Jane the Virgin, was to serve as the showrunner on the project. However, that’s no longer the case as it was revealed in September 2025 that Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder will be the showrunners on the project, and develop the adaptation.
They will also executive produce the series alongside Gina Girolamo and Lucy Score.
Should You Read the Book Instead?
Absolutely yes! Lucy Score’s novel delivers heartfelt moments and laughs that may not fully translate to the screen.
Naomi’s character, which is sharp, funny, and emotionally raw, is best experienced in the original text. And if the TV show flattens any scenes, you’ll already know what’s at stake, emotionally and comically.
Reading now means you’ll be steeped in the fans’ “Knockemout vibe,” ready to pick out details when the show finally drops. It’s like knowing the secret handshakes before the party even starts.
The book is filled with popular romance tropes, including the grumpy/sunshine dynamic, enemies-to-lovers, small-town romance, and found family. If, by some chance, you have never read this book and enjoy these tropes, then this book is likely for you.
Since it will be a while before the Things We Never Got Over TV series is released, you should read the book and get familiar with the lovable characters!
