Rebecca Yarros has become one of the most talked-about authors in recent years. Her books initially started in the romance and military romance world, but it was Fourth Wing, her romantasy novel, that brought her massive success and worldwide recognition.
Today, several of her novels are being adapted for TV and film, and studios across Hollywood are competing to bring her stories to life.
Rebecca Yarros is an American author who has written more than twenty books. Before writing fantasy, she penned emotional, character-driven romances, including The Last Letter, The Things We Leave Unfinished, and In The Likely Event. Her husband served in the military, and that experience influenced many of her stories, especially the way she writes about grief, trauma, and family.
Her writing style is fast-paced, emotional, and engaging. Whether she’s writing dragons or real-world love stories, her books are known for strong character chemistry, lots of tension, and big twists that hit readers right in the heart.
Hollywood took notice, and as of now, four of Rebecca Yarros’s books are officially in development to become movies and TV shows.
- Fourth Wing (and the whole Empyrean series) – TV series at Prime Video
- The Things We Leave Unfinished – Movie at Lionsgate
- In the Likely Event – Movie at Netflix
- The Last Letter – Movie at Amazon MGM Studios
Below is a simple breakdown of each adaptation and what has been announced so far.
All Rebecca Yarros Book-to-Screen Adaptations:
1. Fourth Wing TV Series
Prime Video has announced that it is developing the Fourth Wing TV series. Michael B. Jordan’s company, Outlier Society, is producing the series, with Rebecca Yarros serving as an executive producer. The show is still in development, with Meredith Averill attached as showrunner.
No casting or release date has been announced yet. However, Rebecca Yarros has read drafts of the pilot script and has said it captures the heart of the story, so that’s good news!
The TV series is expected to follow the full five-book arc of the book series.
Fourth Wing follows Violet Sorrengail, a fragile but determined young woman forced to train as a dragon rider at a deadly war college. The book mixes romance, danger, dragons, and political intrigue. It became a global bestseller and made Yarros one of the biggest names in romantasy.
The novel spawned two sequels, Iron Flame and Onyx Storm, with two more books planned for the series.
2. The Things We Leave Unfinished Movie
It was announced that Lionsgate has acquired the movie rights to the novel, and Arash Amel, known for A Private War and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, will be writing the screenplay.
Todd Lieberman’s Hidden Pictures will produce the movie, with Rebecca Yarros serving as an executive producer.
This novel moves between World War II and the present. It follows a wartime love story recorded in an unfinished manuscript, and a modern-day romance. Georgia Stanton returns home after a divorce and reluctantly begins working with a bestselling author to adapt her great-grandmother’s final novel, which is based on her own World War II love story.
The Things We Leave Unfinished is one of Yarros’s most emotional and layered stories, and the film adaptation will have to be exceptional to convey the seamless transition between the WWII storyline and the present-day relationship, while maintaining the emotional tone of the book.
The official casting and filming dates have not been announced yet!
3. In the Likely Event Movie
Another of Rebecca Yarros’s military romance novels, In the Likely Event, is being adapted into a feature-length movie!
Netflix has announced that it will develop the film with Dylan Clark Productions, and Lindsey Ferrentino is writing the script. Producers from both Netflix and Dylan Clark Productions are attached to the project, and the author has shared her excitement about the adaptation.
In The Likely Event begins with a plane crash that changes the lives of Izzy and Nate forever. Their connection grows over the next decade as they deal with family pressure, military service, trauma, and a long, complicated love story.
The movie is expected to capture the emotional, decade-spanning romance that made the book a fan favorite. However, the project is still in development with no cast announced yet.
4. The Last Letter Movie
This is one of Rebecca Yarros’s most heartbreaking novels, and also the latest to be picked up for a movie adaptation.
Amazon MGM Studios recently won the rights after a competitive bidding war, and Anna Klassen is in talks to write the screenplay for the film adaptation. Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody are producing the movie, with Rebecca Yarros serving as an executive producer.
The Last Letter follows Beckett, a veteran who promised his best friend he would look after his sister, Ella, and her children if anything were to happen to him. The story explores themes of love, guilt, loss, and the significance of family.
The movie is still in its early stages, but with Imagine Entertainment behind it, it’s expected to be an intensely emotional drama that remains true to the spirit of the book.
