After the summer, Natalie will put her town behind her and forge success for herself outside this tiny, dinky town in Kentucky. However, when strange things start happening, Natalie isn’t sure what to think. She thinks she is going crazy, which would make sense, given what she sees.

Natalie keeps seeing things wrong. Something will be a different color than it usually is, or something will replace the building. It gets even weirder when the entire town vanishes, and a ghost comes to Natalie, telling her that she only has three months to save ‘him.’

The ‘him’ ends up being a guy named Beau. Natalie falls for him hard when she meets him at the high school stadium. However, while juggling her feelings, she must figure out what is going on in the first place.

2. A Million Junes (2017)

June lives in Five Fingers, Michigan, with her parents. When she runs into Saul Angert one day, it causes issues because her family has always told her to stay away from the Angert family. It’s been the most important rule they’ve had for her over the years.

The issue of her father with the Angert family confuses her because she doesn’t understand why he hates them so much. June never questioned it until bumping into Saul that fateful day.

Eventually, the two start to get closer, which causes issues all around. June must decide whether to put this family feud to rest or continue to hold it up for her father’s sake.

3. When the Sky Fell on Splendor (2019)

Franny has been struggling since the steel mill explosion in her town of Splendor, Ohio, five years ago. She has sought comfort with friends who understand her struggles. They even have a name for their group: The Ordinary.

In their spare time, they are ghost and urban legend hunters. They post the videos online and have fun with it all. It’s a nice distraction from the explosion that put her brother in a coma.

Things get weird when the group of friends films something falling from the sky and crashing in their town. Naturally, The Ordinary needs to go check it out because exploring mysteries in their town is what they do! What they end up finding shocks the teenagers to their core!

4. Hello Girls (2019)

Winona and Lucille have decided to pull a Thelma and Louise. They want to leave their small town in Michigan and head to Chicago. To do this, they need $3000 and a car; it doesn’t matter if the vehicle is stolen; it will work either way.

Both girls want to flee from the complicated lives they have at home. Winona might seem like she has a perfect family on the outside, but it’s a different story on the inside. Her father is physically abusive, even going so far as to deny her food at times because of his controlling nature. Lucille suffers from taking care of her mother and brother, who is a drug dealer.

Neither of these girls can wait for graduation to leave this crappy town and their crappy lives. This is why they want to pull a Thelma and Louise and leave the town as soon as possible.

5. Beach Read (2020)

Writer’s block is a tricky thing. Literary fiction author Augustus Everette and romance novelist January Andrews are both suffering from it. To get their thoughts flowing, they spend some time on the beach and become neighbors.

The two of them are nothing more than neighbors until an encounter one night leads to them producing the craziest plan. Augustus, a writer known for sad endings, will write something happy, while January will step out of her romantic comfort zone and write something dark.

It’s supposed to be nothing more than a way to eliminate their writer’s block. However, feelings get involved, leading to something happening that neither of the struggling writers expected!

6. People We Meet on Vacation (2021)

Despite their differences, Alex and Poppy are best friends. Poppy is the more outgoing of the pair, while Alex is quieter and a homebody. They say opposites attract, and this is the case for Alex and Poppy. Ever since meeting in college, they have been getting together one week in the summer to hang out.

It’s something they have been doing for a decade!

This came to a screeching halt two years ago after a fight. However, Poppy hasn’t been happy for the last two years and reaches out to Alex to take another trip together. He agrees, and the two head out to spend a week together.

Poppy is nervous but determined to figure out what went wrong and repair their once-perfect relationship. The trip will either fix or permanently destroy their already-broken friendship.

7. Book Lovers (2022)

Nora Stephens is a literary agent whose entire life revolves around work. She is torn between going and not going when her sister Libby asks her to accompany her to Sunshine Falls, North Carolina. She eventually agrees because Nora loves her sister and will do whatever she can to make her happy.

She hopes the change of scenery might perk her up a bit and bring some excitement into her life. Then Nora runs into Charlie Lastra, who is also in the town. He is a book editor, so Nora knows him well and is not a fan of him. It seems that even in the ideal city of Sunshine Falls, she cannot escape her work life.

The two end up constantly in each other’s lives while in Sunshine Falls. Nora knows that coincidences happen, but it seems ridiculous now. Is fate trying to tell her something, or is it just a coincidence?

8. Happy Place (2023)

Harriet and Wyn have recently broken up, but they still haven’t told their friends. After dating for years, it’s difficult to break the news that they are no longer together.

Because they haven’t told their friends about the breakup yet, they are forced to share a bedroom during their yearly getaway with their friends. This will be a challenge for a couple who has only broken up for six months because the feelings are still very raw.

To make matters worse, the two still have feelings for each other. Despite this, they agree to fake it for the trip because the cottage is due to be sold. This is the last time they’ll be able to be in this place together.

Surely, Wyn and Harriet can fake it for a week, hopefully!

9. Funny Story (2024)

funny story by emily henry

Daphne always loved the way her fiancé, Peter, described how they met, fell in love, and moved to his hometown, until Peter realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend, Petra.

Now Daphne is in Michigan, without friends or family, but with a dream job as a children’s librarian, and trying to be roommates with a guy named Miles Nowak, who happens to be Petra’s ex!

Miles is scruffy and chaotic, the exact opposite of practical, buttoned-up Daphne, whose coworkers know so little about her they have a running bet that she’s either FBI or in witness protection. The roommates mainly avoid one another until one day, while drowning their sorrows, they form a tenuous friendship and a foolish plan involving posting misleading photos of their summer adventures together.

But it’s all just for show because there’s no way Daphne would start her new chapter by falling in love with her ex-fiancé’s new fiancée’s ex!

10. Great Big Beautiful Life

Alice Scott wants her big writing break, and Hayden Anderson is a Pulitzer-Prize-winning author. And they’re both on an island to write the biography of Margaret Ives, the tragic heiress and a former tabloid princess, and also a woman no one has seen in years.

Margaret has invited them both for a one-month trial period, after which she’ll choose the person to write her biography, and Alice thinks she’s got the upper hand.

According to Alice, she likes people, which means people usually like her too, so she can win the legendary woman over. Plus, she’s been craving a serious job, and this might be it, and she thinks Hayden might see her as a competition because of how shaken he looks with her presence.

But the problem is, Margaret is only giving each of them pieces of her story. Pieces they can’t swap to put together because of an ironclad NDA and an inconvenient yearning pulsing between them every time they’re in the same room.

And it’s becoming abundantly clear that their story—just like the tale Margaret’s spinning—could be a mystery, tragedy, or love ballad depending on who’s telling it.
