Warner Bros. has released the first teaser trailer for Remain, the supernatural romantic thriller written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, based on a story developed by Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks.

The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor and opens in theaters on February 5, 2027.

Originally planned for a Halloween 2026 release, the studio moved it to February, and given the pre-sales and test scores attached to this project, that confidence appears very well-founded.

The Collaboration Nobody Saw Coming

Shyamalan and Sparks independently developed the same original love story into two separate projects: a screenplay and a novel, respectively.

They conceived the story together, then went their separate ways to tell it. The result is genuinely unprecedented—a film and a book that share DNA but were developed entirely distinctly, by two creators working in their own mediums.

Sparks has said that watching Shyamalan’s version of the story felt like seeing a different dimension of what he wrote. That is a remarkable thing for an author to say about an adaptation, and it speaks to how genuinely independent the two creative processes were.

Remain Movie – Teaser Trailer:

Who Is Nicholas Sparks?

If you have somehow missed Nicholas Sparks in the decades he’s been one of America’s most reliably adapted authors, here is the essential version.

Sparks is the author of more than twenty novels, many of which have been adapted into major films: The Notebook, A Walk to Remember, Message in a Bottle, Nights in Rodanthe, Dear John, The Longest Ride, and many more. His books have sold more than 130 million copies worldwide and have been published in over fifty languages.

Remain is notable as Sparks’ first outright supernatural novel. It is a significant departure for a writer known for grounded, emotionally devastating love stories. Shyamalan’s influence likely pushed the story into territory Sparks hadn’t previously explored on his own.

The novel was published in October 2025 and became an instant number one New York Times bestseller. For Sparks, that is a familiar position. For a novel with a ghost story at its center, it is a new kind of achievement.

What Is Remain About?

Tate Gordon is a reclusive architect who arrives in Cape Cod following a stay in an upscale psychiatric facility where he was treated for acute depression after the death of his beloved sister—a sister who, the story reveals, could see spirits, a trait that runs in the family. He has come to Cape Cod to finish a project and, presumably, to try to put himself back together.

There, he meets Wren—played by Phoebe Dynevor—an alluring young woman who quickly draws him out of his shell. Their romance initially feels almost idyllic: dancing, board games, the specific warmth of two lonely people finding each other.

And then she disappears from a bathroom right in front of him.

In the trailer, Wren asks Tate the question that the entire film hangs on:

“Why can’t we be together, Tate?”

His reply is quiet and devastating:

“I think you know.”

The novel leans heavily into questions of grief, spirits, and whether love can transcend the boundary between life and death. Tate begins to realize that in order to free Wren from an increasingly desperate fate, he will need to unearth the truth about her past before time runs out.

The Cast and Creative Team

Jake Gyllenhaal as Tate is a casting choice that makes immediate sense. He has spent the better part of the last decade building one of Hollywood’s most varied and interesting careers. He has a particular gift for playing men who are quietly falling apart, holding it together through sheer force of will.

Phoebe Dynevor, who broke through globally as Daphne Bridgerton, brings exactly the luminous warmth the role of Wren requires—a character who needs to feel absolutely real and absolutely present even as the film slowly reveals what she actually is.

The supporting cast includes Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty, Jay O. Sanders, Tracy Ifeachor, Hannah James, Caleb Ruminer, Kieran Mulcare, and Maria Dizzia.

Shyamalan produces alongside Ashwin Rajan through Blinding Edge Pictures, with Marc Bienstock and Sparks’ producing partner Theresa Park. Sparks serves as executive producer.

Before the Twist Finds You in the Dark

Here is the unusual thing about Remain: the novel and the film are not the same experience twice. They are two different storytellers using the same raw material to reach the same emotional destination by different roads.

Reading the Sparks version gives you his take on grief, love, and what persists after loss. Watching the Shyamalan version will give you a filmmaker’s instincts about when to withhold and when to reveal, built entirely around his own screenplay.
