Stephen King has revealed that his next novel is called Anything for Holly. And yes, he says it’s the last book to feature Holly Gibney, our favorite private investigator.
King told USA Today he’s just finished the book, and he sounded more than a little nostalgic about saying goodbye. Fair warning, we’re a bit emotional too.
There’s no official plot, cover, or release date yet. But we do have plenty to talk about, so here’s everything we know about Anything for Holly so far!
What Is Anything for Holly About?
Let’s start with the honest part: there’s no official synopsis for Anything for Holly. The author hasn’t shared the story, and no excerpt has been released.
What we do know is that this will be the final Holly Gibney novel. In an October 6 USA Today interview, King said he had just finished the book, and the question was how it felt to end her story.
His answer was warm, and a little wistful:
She means a lot to me. She’s my dear one. And she means a lot to readers who have followed her for a long time.
I didn’t cry beautiful tears or anything like that, but yeah, I got a little nostalgic I guess you would say. I always say to myself, well, maybe she’ll come back in some form or another, but I really don’t think so.
King also reportedly told the Talking Scared podcast that this is “a BIG one,” and that he’s deep in rewriting and editing it. According to reports, he wanted to give Holly a major case before letting her retire.
That’s a lot of build-up for a character who nearly didn’t exist. Holly first appeared in Mr. Mercedes in 2014 as a shy recluse. Over the years, she grew into an intrepid private investigator.
She returned in Finders Keepers and End of Watch, then played a major role in The Outsider. She later became the main character in If It Bleeds, the title character in Holly, and the star of Never Flinch.
Stephen King has said she wasn’t supposed to stick around:
I could never let Holly Gibney go, from the Mr. Mercedes books. I mean, she was supposed to be a walk-on character and she just kind of stole the book and stole my heart.
Holly has also made the jump to the screen. Justine Lupe played her in Mr. Mercedes, and Cynthia Erivo took on the role in The Outsider. A TV series based on the novel Holly has also been in development.
King seems to have been planning this farewell for a while. In October 2025, he said he was rereading The Outsider because he had an idea for one last Holly book.
So what might the final case look like? We honestly don’t know, and we’re not going to guess too hard. But after the success of Holly and Never Flinch, we’d expect a mystery with real emotional weight.

When Is Anything for Holly Releasing?
Here’s the honest answer: there’s no official release date for Anything for Holly. Reports point to 2027, but that’s an expectation, not an announcement.
King said he’s still rewriting and editing, which fits that timeline. A book this big will likely take time to polish, and the publisher hasn’t revealed a date.
King moved quickly on this one. In early January 2026, he posted on Threads that he was returning to Holly:
I’m going to write about Holly again. Happy New Year to me.
By October, he says it’s finished. For a character fans have followed for over a decade, that’s an exciting turnaround.
The book also follows Other Worlds Than These, King’s third Talisman novel, which arrived on October 6, 2026. So Holly’s farewell is the next big King novel on the horizon.
You may see graphics online showing a dark green cover with the year 2027 and a note that the final cover is coming soon. These appear to come from fan accounts, so we’d treat them as unofficial.
For context, Never Flinch was announced in November 2024 for a May 2025 release. That’s only a rough pattern, but it suggests King’s publisher tends to reveal covers and dates several months ahead.
For now, there’s no official cover, publisher announcement, or page count. The best places to watch are King’s own channels and his publisher’s announcements.
Until then, rereading the Holly books might be the best way to prepare. After all, we have a goodbye to get ready for.
