It’s official! Rebecca Ross’s Divine Rivals movie adaptation is officially happening! The winner of the 2023 Goodreads Favorite Young Adult Fantasy and Science Fiction award is coming to the big screen.

Rebecca Ross’s Divine Rivals was released on April 4, 2023, to rave reviews. It spent over 100 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List and received over 100,000 reviews on Goodreads, most of them highly positive. The book features the popular rival-to-lovers trope and a slow-burn romance that is deliciously frustrating.

It’s set in a world with warring gods, a war that the main female character, Iris Winnow, finds herself in the middle of! Iris wants nothing more than to search for her brother and uncover the truth about the conflict between the gods, Enva and Dacre.

A sequel, Ruthless Vows, was released on December 26, 2023, with a prequel to the series, Wild Reverence, released in September last year.

On June 3, 2025, it was announced that the rights to the Divine Rivals film adaptation had been acquired. To keep up with any updates regarding the movie and the release of the prequel book, consider following Rebecca Ross on social media. It’s the best way to stay connected with this beloved series and the author.

Divine Rivals was a hit when it was published in 2023, and once it hits the big screen, it will be a formidable entry into the romantasy movie genre. So, let’s check out everything we know about the upcoming movie adaptation!

What is the Plot of the Divine Rivals Movie Adaptation?

The Divine Rivals movie is being adapted from the first book in the series, and while there will be some changes, it will remain faithful to the source material.

Divine Rivals tells the story of Iris Winnow, an eighteen-year-old young woman whose brother recently went missing after being forced to fight on the frontline of a war between two warring gods. With her mother being no help, Iris decides that the only way to find her brother is to win the columnist promotion at the Oath Gazette.

But things don’t go according to plan. Her letters to her brother end up in Roman Kitt’s hands, her rival at the paper. A magical connection soon begins to grow between them, forcing them to rely on each other in a way neither expected.

If you haven’t yet read the book and want to know more about the plot, here’s its official synopsis:

After centuries of sleep, the gods are warring again!

All eighteen-year-old Iris Winnow wants to do is hold her family together. With a brother on the frontline forced to fight on behalf of the Gods, now missing from the frontline, and a mother drowning her sorrows, Iris’s best bet is winning the columnist promotion at the Oath Gazette.

But when Iris’s letters to her brother fall into the wrong hands – that of the handsome but cold Roman Kitt, her rival at the paper – an unlikely magical connection forms.

Expelled into the middle of a mystical war, magical typewriters in tow, can their bond withstand the fight for the fate of mankind and, most importantly, love?

An epic enemies-to-lovers fantasy novel filled with hope and heartbreak, and the unparalleled power of love.

Divine Rivals Movie Release Date:

On June 3, 2025, it was announced that the rights to the Divine Rivals film adaptation had been acquired. It’s still in the early stages and is likely to remain in the pre-production stage for some time.

As such, there is no release date for the movie! We don’t even know which year the film is expected to be released!

To stay up to date with the latest news on the Divine Rivals movie, consider following the author on social media, as that’s the first place you will learn about updates on the film’s development!

Casting & Production Updates:

Paramount Pictures has won the rights to bring Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross to the big screen. It was quite a bidding war, too, with multiple studios vying for the rights to this popular romantic fantasy series.

Sofia Alvarez, who was attached to the first two movies in the To All the Boys I’ve Loved film series, will be writing the script. Also involved is Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who signed on as a producer.

Rebecca Ross, the author herself, will be involved as an executive producer. Fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing the author will be involved, ensuring it stays faithful to the original material.

The cast of the Divine Rivals movie adaptation has not been announced, since it’s still too early for any casting to be done, let alone rumors of who could be considered for the main leads.

Should You Read The Book Instead?

The answer to whether you should read the book instead is entirely subjective. We assume you’ve read the book if you are reading this article, but if you are in the minority who haven’t, good news!

This movie is still in pre-production, so if you want to read the book before the movie comes out, you have plenty of time.

If you ask for my recommendation, I will always suggest reading the book first, as it always helps. As you read the source, you will learn everything about the characters and plot. When the adaptation comes out, you can watch it and see your favorite characters come to life on the screen!

So, immerse yourself in this rich fantasy world, and when the Divine Rivals movie comes out, you’ll be ready.
