Keanu Reeves Is Star In Oliver Lowe’s Kill Current Movie Adaptation!

John Wick: Chapter 4 is out, Ballerina is finished, and a fifth John Wick film is in development. Yet Keanu Reeves, who could very comfortably spend the rest of his career in that world and nobody would complain, has done something genuinely interesting instead.

The Arena has preemptively acquired Kill Current: A Jon Hendricks Thriller, an upcoming novel from Oliver Lowe, with Keanu Reeves set to star and produce alongside Alexandra Grant through their newly announced production company, Two Dragonflies.

The film marks the first project from Two Dragonflies—a banner Reeves and Grant founded together to tell stories across film, TV, animation, comics, games, and literature—and the novel won’t even hit shelves until May 2027.

Hollywood bought this book before most readers even knew it existed. That kind of preemptive confidence is worth noticing.

Who Is Oliver Lowe?

Oliver Lowe is the pen name of writer Casey Stegman, who has previously published short fiction in American crime and noir literary journals. Kill Current represents his debut novel, a significant leap from short-form fiction into a planned thriller series with a major studio film already attached.

Zando, the independent publishing company releasing Kill Current in May 2027, has built a reputation for ambitious literary acquisitions and high-profile partnerships.

The fact that their founder and CEO, Molly Stern, is executive producing the film signals how fully the publishing and film sides of this project have been integrated from the start.

Stern described the novel’s ambition in terms that explain exactly why Hollywood came running:

“Oliver Lowe’s masterful story, the first in his upcoming Jon Hendricks series, is poised to reinvent the geopolitical thriller for the modern era. Kill Current is rooted in the issues shaping today’s world—semiconductors, global supply chains, technological and information warfare. It delivers the fast-paced, globe-trotting read and complex, intriguing characters that thriller fans of any era crave.”

What Is Kill Current About?

The official description from Penguin Random House gives us the bones of what Jon Hendricks’ first mission looks like:

A technology that isn’t supposed to exist for another decade. The superpowers who will do anything to possess it. And one ex-agent who needs to find his missing operative.

Jon Hendricks is a burned-out CIA officer who has left the field and reinvented himself as a professor. He’s now the kind of man who has very deliberately put distance between himself and the life he used to live. That distance collapses when his handler pulls him back in to investigate the disappearance of a protégé he personally trained.

The story that follows takes Hendricks from Shanghai to Berlin to Costa Rica. The globe-spanning investigation puts him at the center of a war over advanced semiconductor technology that threatens to reshape the balance of power between the world’s major nations.

His new partner in the field is Gloria Zhao, and the dynamic between a burned-out veteran and a sharp new operative is one of the most reliable engines in the thriller genre.

The novel’s contemporary grounding—in real, ongoing geopolitical tensions around technology and supply chains—gives the action stakes that purely fictional threats can’t quite replicate.

The New Production Company Making Its Mark

Two Dragonflies is the creative vehicle that makes this announcement significant beyond just another Keanu Reeves action announcement.

Reeves described what it means to him in a statement that speaks to genuine creative investment rather than just another star producer credit:

“I’m excited and grateful for the opportunity to develop the character Jon Hendricks with these wonderful collaborators and that this is the project that launches Two Dragonflies, which I share with my partner, Alexandra Grant.”

Alexandra Grant (artist, author, and Reeves’ creative and life partner) co-founded Two Dragonflies with a genuinely expansive ambition. Grant’s statement about the project captures what the company is reaching for:

“Taking Kill Current from publishing into film form, and aligning with The Arena, Oliver Lowe, and Zando is the kind of creative work Keanu and I have set up Two Dragonflies to do.”

The Arena, which is financing and producing the film, was launched in October 2025 by former Lionsgate film chief Erik Feig with a focus on building franchises for modern global audiences. Feig’s description of Reeves was direct and unambiguous:

“Keanu Reeves is a singular talent and synonymous with the kind of intelligent action franchises we are aiming to make.”

No director or additional cast has been announced, but a 32-second teaser featuring black-and-white footage showing a silhouette moving through a maze has already been released.

Jon Hendricks Is Coming—Whoever He Turns Out to Be

Kill Current won’t be available to read until May 2027, which means that for the first time in a while, the film and the book arrive at roughly the same moment for most audiences.

There is no head start here. No opportunity to form a deep attachment to Jon Hendricks on the page before Keanu Reeves makes the role his own.

For thriller readers who want the pure reading experience first, the window is narrow: May 2027 before the film takes over the conversation. For everyone else, the film and the novel will be discovered at the same time. Two different ways into the same character, the same globe-spanning chase, the same question of how much a burned-out man has left to give when the thing he’s fighting for becomes personal.

The geopolitical thriller has been waiting for a modern franchise anchor. Jon Hendricks might be it. And Keanu Reeves—who has spent the better part of fifteen years proving that action cinema can have genuine craft and genuine heart—might be exactly the right person to carry him.
